Free Amino Acids as Regulators of Osmotic Pressure in Aquatic Insect Larvae
نویسنده
چکیده
Microanalytical techniques are used to show that organic molecules play an important role is osmoregulation. Changes in the inorganic ion composition of haemolymph from fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypt} are correlated with the changes in the concentration of organic ions. Free amino acids have a significant role in regulating haemolymph osmotic pressure with respect to the osmotic pressure of the water in which the animal lives. Mechanisms by which amino acid levels could respond to changes in salt concentration are discussed.

Ion Concentration and Activity in the Haemolymph of Aedes Aegypti Larvae
The ionic composition of the haemolymph was measured in fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti (reared in 0-30% sea water, the animals' natural salinity range). Inorganic ions and free amino acids form a substantial part of the haemolymph osmotic concentration. With increasing external osmotic pressure, there is an increase in the concentration of the amino acids, not the major inorganic cations...
متن کاملPattern of activity levels of amino trnasferases in the gonads of silkworm, Bombyx mori L.on exposure to prostaglandin F2
The impact of PGF2? on total proteins, free amino acids and the amino transferases in the gonads of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. were investigated in the present experiment. The effect of PGF2? resulted in increase in the total protein and free amino acid contents in the gonads of silkworm larvae indicating improved structural and dynamic levels of organization. The enhanced activity levels of amin...
متن کاملThe effect of silver nanoparticles on the taste feeding behavior of Acipenser persicus to some Amino acids
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on taste feeding behavior of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) juveniles, including taste palatability index, fishing efficiency and the number of consumed pellets, to some amino acids. Taste Feeding behavior was investigated following exposure to 0.01, 0.005 and 0.001 mg L-1 AgNPs for 21 (each group with 3 re...
متن کاملThe permeability to water of the cuticles of some adult water bugs.
Studies of the water balance in adult water bugs have been reported in previous papers (Staddon, 1963, 1964). The adults lose water in the rectal fluid and gain water as a result of drinking and by osmotic uptake through the cuticle. The rate of osmotic uptake was estimated indirectly, from a knowledge of the rates of rectal fluid production and drinking, to lie between 2 and 7% of the body wei...
متن کاملAn aquatic vertebrate can use amino acids from environmental water.
Conventional food-web theory assumes that nutrients from dissolved organic matter are transferred to aquatic vertebrates via long nutrient pathways involving multiple eukaryotic species as intermediary nutrient transporters. Here, using larvae of the salamander Hynobius retardatus as a model system, we provide experimental evidence of a shortcut nutrient pathway by showing that H. retardatus la...
